Wizard of Oz Birthday Party!

Addie loves the Wizard of Oz.  She had been talking about having a Wizard of Oz birthday party, ever since she saw Grandpa in a local production of it this summer.  With a REAL Dorothy of course.

There are very few Wizard of Oz themed party decorations/games/etc. so I started searching the internet and found a TON of ideas.   They started off with a cupcake idea I found.  I am not great at decorating so I hired my neighbor to do that part- but the kids and I did make the fun rainbow cupcakes!

Next came the invitation. We found it online and it was so cute and perfect for our party!

I was able to come up with a bunch of ideas for the party but they wouldn't have come to life without the help of my wonderful mom.  She ran all over the place looking for things that would work and then spent an entire evening over here and all morning of the party helping me prepare and get it all ready.  Thank you Mom!!!!

We made a yellow brick road up the steps and all through the house, including the circle/start of the yellow brick road in the family room which we referred to as "Munchkinland"! We decorated with giant flowers on the walls and a house on top of the Wicked Witch's legs!

Everyone gathered in Munchkinland while we waited for all the guests to arrive.  Once they were all here, thanks to Grandpa, we were lucky enough to have the "real" Dorothy join our party!  Addie was thrilled and all of the kids were quite mesmerized by her.   She gave a quick re-cap of the story and then led the kids down the yellow brick road to their games!

Half of the kids went down to the basement to do a Wicked Witch Relay Race.  They had to put on a hat and cape and fly on their broom to the end and back then move to the next person until everyone on the team had gone.

The other half stayed upstairs to get a rainbow painted on their face and to make a tin man glitter heart necklace.

Once everyone had a chance to do those two things, they all gathered back in Munchkinland so Dorothy could sing Somewhere Over the Rainbow for them and so they could say goodbye.  She had a beautiful voice and it was amazing how wonderful it sounded being in the same room with her!

After Dorothy left, we played two more games.  Half went down to the basement for the Tin Man Bean Bag Toss and the other half stayed upstairs to play Pin the Body on the Scarecrow!

No party is complete without a pinata so once the games were over, we headed down to the basement to take some whacks at the rainbow pinata and get LOTS of candy and treats!

We headed back upstairs so Addie could open her presents.  She got so many fun presents and she is so lucky to have such great friends!

Presents were followed by singing Happy Birthday and having her blow her candle out- but we sent the cupcakes home as party favors. :)  Didn't the cupcakes turn out adorable!  We loved them!

They also each went home with a cute little picnic basket party favor bag containing smarties (for the scarecrow), skittles (rainbow), a lollipop (munckinland), bubbles and a wand (glenda)!

We turned on the movie while we waited for parents to arrive to pick them up and all of the kids were glued to it!  I guess I could have saved myself all the trouble and just had them watch the movie!

The party was fun.  It turned out to be way bigger than I normally would have done and a ton of work- especially with 20 kids but I'm glad we did it and I think all of the kids really enjoyed it and had a good time.

Thank you to all my friends and family who helped me out with this party! I appreciate it so much!

Happy 6th Birthday to my favorite Dorothy!!!!
