Since Will is now three, we decided it was probably time to get going on the potty training and get him out of diapers! We had made small attempts prior to him turning three but he showed no interest so we backed off it little. I really do believe that if you do it when they are ready, things go so much better!
In late October/mid-November, we were finally able to get him to actually go on the potty and have some success and thus began our potty training journey! We promised him a Chuggington Die Cast train if he would just go on the potty (most of the time, he would only sit for a minute then get up) so the first time he actually went, he was thrilled! The next night, he went again and of course, decided he needed another train! We agreed to one more train, and then decided it was time to put a sticker chart into place.
We started with the sticker chart and pretty much only going once per day. Since we were leaving on our trip to Branson, I didn't want to be dealing with a potty training toddler so we didn't push it very hard. He continued to do great while we were on our trip- going whenever we put him on. He was pretty proud of himself when he finished his first sticker chart and earned another train.
After that train, we were able to start rewarding him with some die-cast Disney Cars that our neighbor had given us, when he completed a whole potty chart. He did really well whenever we put him on but I'll admit that since the month of December was so crazy, it wasn't top priority!
Once January arrived, I started putting him in pull ups during the day to make it easier to go potty more often and he was actually staying dry for some pretty long periods! Last Monday, Grandma was babysitting and decided to put him in underwear (he had worn it for fun here and there but never for very long). Of course, he had an accident and freaked out about it but was fine once all the wet clothes were off him!
Tuesday I decided it was time to start full time with the underwear and so we jumped right in! He has done really well! Only a few accidents here and there and that's usually because I wasn't paying attention to how long it had been since he went last. Hopefully we can get to the point where he tells me when he has to go soon! He has even been staying dry most nights and most naps! We had a lot of time spent just like the picture below! No pants and playing with his cars!
We were having some issues with him going poop in the potty (he was hiding or waiting till naptime when he had a diaper on), but it really hasn't been too bad. The other day, we were able to convince him with the promise of a new car if he just WENT on the potty instead of in his underwear or diaper and it worked! He was so excited!
Of course, today when he went again, he wanted another car as a reward!
We are now starting with a staying dry/pooping in the potty chart for his next car! Here's to hoping he stays motivated!!!
These are all his "potty prizes" he's earned over the last few months! I think he's done pretty well for himself!
I would definitely call our first real week of potty training successful! Way to go Will! We are so proud of you buddy!
